1. My display isn't showing full screen on my monitor
This is almost always caused by Windows being set to Duplicate (mirror) mode. In this mode, Windows forces both screens to share a single resolution — if your laptop and monitor have different native resolutions, one screen will appear cropped, bordered, or blurry.
Switching to Extend mode allows each screen to run at its own native resolution and resolves the problem. See How to switch to Extend mode below.
2. Display modes explained
| Mode | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Extend these displaysRecommended | Each screen shows different content. Desktop spans both monitors. | Day-to-day office work. |
| Duplicate these displays | Both screens show the same image. Can cause scaling issues if resolutions differ. | Presenting to a room audience. |
| Second screen only | Only the external monitor is active. | Docked / desk-only setups. |
| PC screen only | Only the laptop screen is active. | Working without the external monitor. |
3. How to switch to Extend mode
- Open Display settings Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select Display settings.
Or: Start → Settings → System → Display - Check the monitor layout At the top of Display settings you will see a diagram of your connected monitors labelled 1 and 2. Click Identify if you are unsure which number matches which physical screen.
- Open the Multiple displays dropdown Scroll down to find the Multiple displays row. Click the dropdown — it likely reads Duplicate these displays — and select Extend these displays.
- Keep the changes A prompt will appear asking whether to keep the new settings. Click Keep changes. You have 15 seconds before Windows reverts automatically.
- Arrange monitors if needed If your mouse doesn't move naturally between screens, drag the numbered monitor boxes in the arrangement area to match their physical positions on your desk. Click Apply.
4. Quick keyboard shortcut
You can switch display modes at any time without opening Settings:
5. Resolution mismatch between laptop and monitor
Newer laptops often have high-DPI screens (e.g. 2560×1600) while office monitors typically run at 1920×1080. When Duplicate mode is active, Windows must pick a single shared resolution for both screens, resulting in a blurry or bordered image on one of them.
This is a hardware limitation — Windows cannot simultaneously mirror two screens at two different native resolutions. The solution is always Extend mode, which lets each screen run at its own optimal resolution.
6. Further troubleshooting
External monitor not detected
Unplug and firmly re-seat the display cable (HDMI or DisplayPort) at both ends.
In Display settings, click Detect under the monitor arrangement area.
Restart your laptop with the monitor connected and powered on — Windows often detects external displays during startup.
If still not detected, log a new ticket with IT Support. A driver update may be required.
Mouse doesn't move smoothly between screens
The monitor positions in Windows don't match your physical desk layout. In Display settings, drag the numbered monitor boxes to reflect where each screen sits on your desk (e.g. drag monitor 2 to the right of monitor 1). Click Apply.
Text or apps look blurry or too large after extending
Each monitor can have its own scale setting. In Display settings, click the monitor that looks wrong and adjust its Scale value — typically 100% for standard 1080p monitors and 125–150% for high-DPI laptop screens. Click Apply.
