Recovering permanently deleted files

Modified on Fri, 10 Jul at 7:26 PM

If a file is no longer in your Recycle Bin — either it was emptied, or it's been more than 93 days — there are still two ways to get it back.

1. Check the second-stage recycle bin (shared / SharePoint sites)

When items are removed from a site's Recycle Bin, they move to a second-stage recycle bin for the remainder of the 93-day window.

  1. Open the SharePoint site and click Recycle bin in the bottom-left menu.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click Second-stage recycle bin.
  3. Select the item and click Restore.

If you don't see the second-stage option, you may not have site-admin rights — contact IT and we'll restore it for you.

2. Ask IT to restore from backup

INTEGRIS keeps separate backups of OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams files using Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. Even if a file is past the 93-day window or has been fully purged, IT can often recover it from backup.

Contact IT as soon as you realise the file is gone — the sooner you ask, the more likely it's still within our backup retention. Please include:

  • The file name (or as much of it as you remember).
  • Where it was stored — your OneDrive folder, or which SharePoint site / Teams channel.
  • Roughly when you last saw it.

Note: Backup restores are performed by IT and are not self-serve.
